PRESS RELEASE: Former Maine Hospital Association President Pushes Back on False Attacks Against Collins

BANGOR, Maine – As Troy Jackson and Chuck Schumer’s dark-money allies continue attacking Senator Susan Collins on health care with a claim that has been repeatedly debunked by independent fact-checkers, one of Maine’s most experienced health care leaders is speaking out.

Steven Michaud, the longtime former President of the Maine Hospital Association, is appearing in a new Collins for Senator ad to set the record straight about Senator Collins’ work protecting health care in Maine.
“I spent my career protecting health care in Maine, and I know the attacks against Susan Collins on health care are completely false,” said Michaud. “Susan delivered $190 million for Maine’s rural hospitals just this year. She is the reason Millinocket, Rumford, and Bridgton have new emergency departments. She is the reason for mobile mammography in parts of rural Maine, and Susan is bringing true innovation to rural health care. Susan Collins cares, and her work is saving lives.”

Michaud’s message comes as “Affordable Maine,” a dark-money group aligned with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, launched another television ad repeating the claim that Collins cast a “deciding vote” to advance legislation that included Medicaid reductions.

As we have said repeatedly, independent FactCheck.org has already found that claim to be false.
FactCheck.org noted that without Collins’ vote on the procedural motion, the vote would have been tied 50-50, and Vice President JD Vance was present and prepared to break the tie. Collins ultimately voted against the legislation specifically because of its Medicaid provisions.

“It is a slap in the face to Maine voters to predicate an entire campaign on lying to those you are seeking to represent,” said Blake Kernen, spokeswoman for Collins for Senator. “The facts are clear. Senator Collins voted against the OBBBA explicitly because she opposed its Medicaid cuts, and her procedural vote did not determine whether the bill advanced. Chuck Schumer’s ads may sound like a broken record, but the only record that matters is Senator Collins’ – and that one is crystal clear.”
