As a Maine parent, I pay attention when policymakers discuss products that can affect our kids. At a recent Senate HELP Committee hearing, Sen. Susan Collins questioned surgeon general nominee Dr. Nicole Saphier about flavored e-cigarettes and nicotine products, including their appeal to young people.

The issue deserves attention. Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids reports that about 90% of youth who use e-cigarettes or nicotine pouches use flavored products. During the hearing, Collins also emphasized the surgeon general’s role in communicating the dangers of smoking and vaping to young people.

Saphier acknowledged adolescents’ vulnerability to nicotine and said she would review the evidence and work with the FDA if confirmed. For Maine families, continued public discussion of youth nicotine use and the evidence surrounding flavored products is important. Thank you, Sen. Collins, for standing up for our children.
