New ad against Susan Collins doesn’t withstand scrutiny | Letter

A recent television ad funded by Majority Forward, a dark money group tied to Chuck Schumer, features a Skowhegan physician making claims about Sen. Susan Collins that simply don’t hold up to scrutiny.

The ad claims Collins voted to cut Medicaid and give the president a “blank check” for war with Iran. Both statements are false.

The truth: Collins voted against Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” specifically because of its Medicaid cuts, which could have cost Maine $5.9 billion over 10 years and would threaten rural hospitals, including those serving communities like Skowhegan. PolitiFact rated similar claims about Collins and Medicaid cuts as false.

In fact, Collins was hailed as a “Medicaid Champion” by the American Network of Community Options and Resources for her efforts to protect access to Medicaid.

As for the “blank check” claim, the Senate has not voted to authorize or appropriate funds for military action against Iran. Collins has also voted to end those hostilities.

Mainers deserve honest debate. This ad isn’t it.
