BANGOR, Maine – As Chuck Schumer and his partisan allies continue to fill the airwaves with misleading attacks about Senator Susan Collins’ voting record, FactCheck.org this week debunked multiple false claims that have become central to the campaign against her.
The independent fact-checking organization reviewed an advertisement from the Democratic dark money group ‘Affordable Maine’ which claims Senator Collins supported the One Big Beautiful Bill Act’s Medicaid cuts. FactCheck.org concluded that claim was false because Senator Collins was one of only three Republican senators who voted against the bill and explicitly cited its Medicaid provisions as the primary reason for her opposition.
At the time of the vote, Senator Collins warned that the bill’s estimated $5.9 billion reduction in future Medicaid funding for Maine over the next decade could threaten access to health care for the nearly 400,000 Mainers who depend on the program and jeopardize the continued operation of rural health care providers.
“My vote against this bill stems primarily from the harmful impact it will have on Medicaid, affecting low-income families and rural health care providers like our hospitals and nursing homes,” Senator Collins said in a statement following her vote against the OBBBA.
FactCheck.org also reviewed Democrats’ claim that Senator Collins’ earlier procedural vote on the OBBBA was decisive in advancing the legislation. The fact check debunked that claim as well, highlighting that without Senator Collins’ vote, the motion would have resulted in a 50-50 tie and that Vice President JD Vance was present in the Senate and prepared to cast the deciding vote to advance the bill.
“Maine Democrats and their outside groups have built a campaign around lies that an independent, non-partisan fact check organization has found to be completely false,” said Shawn Roderick, spokesman for Collins for Senator. “The facts are clear. Senator Collins voted against the OBBBA explicitly because she opposed its Medicaid cuts, and her procedural vote did not determine whether the bill advanced. No amount of dishonest advertising or political spin can change her record. The fact that the Democrats’ campaign relies on repeatedly lying to Maine voters about Senator Collins’ record speaks volumes about the weakness of their case.”
