Simones' Hot Dog Stand

simones_0.jpgSimones' Hot Dog Stand is a landmark third-generation, family-owned restaurant in Lewiston, a required stop for anyone wanting to catch up on the local news, politics and sports. This week, it is celebrating its 100th anniversary. I stopped by to congratulate the owners, Jimmy and Linda Simones, their son George, and all the crew who were busy serving up steamed red hot dogs with all the fixings, their home-made chili, and tons of French fries.

The place was really hopping today, crammed full with customers. I had a delightful chat with Jimmy's aunt and uncle, Pauline and Christo Simones, who both served in the military during World War II. Pauline was a Marine! She must have been one of the first women ever to enlist in the Marine Corps. I loved talking with them.

The Simones are a wonderful Maine family. I ought to know -- their daughter Melissa works for me in Washington. Melissa brings the Simones' trademark commitment to always working hard with a big smile.
